Situation Rhubarb and co-curator Rebecca Travis present BUILT AROUND YOU, a residential artist project in the area of Heaton, Newcastle. Taking place across the month of October 2012, BUILT AROUND YOU comprises of a three-week artist residency, a resulting group exhibition and an events programme over the course of the project, taking place at 188 Simonside Terrace, Heaton.

The area of Heaton, as well as at some point being a place to call ‘home’ for all involved in the project, is a vibrant community constantly in flux. As an area populated by young people and students with no stable hold on a property, many of the residents move year by year from one terraced house to the next. With this in mind artists Alex Hanson-Deakin, Rachel Maloney, Claire Rowlands and Rebecca Travis will create artworks on-site at an empty terraced property. They will explore the house, its architecture, history, and surrounding environment, in addition to wider themes such as the terraced house as a framework for living, transient communities, the ‘nesting’ process and physical traces left behind - drawing both on their own personal experiences and memories and those present in the house.
